Let’s Leave our 2020 Skin Behind…

New skin, new me...

After the craziest year of our existence, everything that we do has been reshaped to suit our new world. From the bushfires that devastated Australia this time last year, and a global pandemic that shocked the globe, nothing will ever be quite the same.

If you’re anything like us, your skincare routine went out the window in 2020 (if you even had one to start with). We went from the hustle and bustle of our mediocre but busy lives, sharing plates of food, travelling, wearing make-up to work to suddenly isolating at home, panic buying toilet paper, meeting your co-workers on zoom with the bottom half of your PJ’s still on, home schooling kids and consistently forgetting the day of the week.

A portion of us have somewhat returned to a new ‘normal’, but the way that we treat our skin needs to change. COVID has taught us that our hygiene levels pre-COVID were probably not up to scratch and our routines were too jammed with useless things. We’ve learned that by simplifying our lives, we’re doing ourselves a favour. Let’s apply these learnings to our skincare…

We’re wearing masks everywhere! Our skin can become clammy under the mask which can later cause more oiliness or dryness. It’s important that we both hydrate and tone our skin with as minimal products as possible. Combining too many products can be both expensive and less effective. Your skincare routine doesn’t need to be complex.

  • Cleanse your face with warm water and a gentle cleanser every day along with the rest of your routine, i.e. brushing your teeth. When you attach an action to an existing habit, the new action is more likely to stick and become a habit as well.
  • We’re not going out as much, and we’re wearing masks – so we can get away with a light BB cream instead of a typical foundation + the works. Even as we go back to work and don’t have to wear masks as much – ‘skinimalism’ is the new trend for 2021, so it’s probable most of us will continue our minimalistic make-up anyway!
  • Skincare goes beyond makeup and cleansing / toning / moisturising products, it’s important that we look after our skin in the sun too. Ensure that you’re wearing good sun protection when you’re outside, such as the typical 30+ SPF sunscreen (as a minimum), hat and sunnies. Skin experts say that this is one of the most simple yet effective ways of taking care of your skin.
  • Don't just wash your face - wash your masks and your pillow cases. I'll say no more on this one.
  • If you struggle to find the balance between moisturising and toning and want something super simple, opt for a hydrating and toning face mist! With a daily spritz on the face, you can improve your skin without spending much money or extra time in your routine. You can also take your face mist with you to the gym for after your workout, on your desk when you’re feeling a bit flustered, when you wake up or before you go to bed. Look for face mists that are made of natural ingredients and have a good ratio of the important ingredients. Avoid mists that are more than 50% diluted or are a pretty colour (often indicates a dye has been used).

Keep it simple, don’t overthink it, and don’t underestimate the power in a simple skincare routine 😊
